Water Main Break Crisis— Week Two
1.6 million people in Southern Alberta are at risk of running out of water
Officials warn that we could run out of water if conservation is not our number one priority.
A State of Local Emergency was declared on June 15 for Calgary and surrounding communities due to a catastrophic water main break in Northwest Calgary on June 5. A state of emergency status allows for an aggressive approach to repairing the damage and restoring water as soon as possible.
Along with news of the water main break, they recommended that Calgarians and area residents and businesses cut back on their consumption, and a Stage 4 water ban was instated — no outdoor watering of lawns, plants, trees, and buildings under threat of being fined.
What does that mean for residents?
It’s not that the city is out of water, but due to the main break and the repair process, water pressure will be reduced to the network of water mains feeding off the one where the first break occurred.
In surrounding communities, officials have asked residents to cut back on water usage by 25 percent.
