At The North Sea, I found my lighthouse.

I was traveling across Great Britain as a teen, with the youth orchestra from Canada. We were billeted with local families, so we experienced the country from the people's view rather than the tourist’s view.

On my first evening in Scotland, the father of my Scottish ‘family’, asked me if I had ever tasted real Scotch whisky. I said that I had not.

He handed me a small glass and told me once I’d tried Scotch whisky I’d never forget it.

He was right, I remembered that small glass of Scotch whisky. Even though I’ve tried other whiskies since then, nothing compares to that very first small glass I had when I was young.

Perhaps it was the best because it was the first? It’s that way with some things.
