A Hawthorne and Horowitz Mystery #2, published November 2018

My star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

The story

His last words, heard over the phone were, “You shouldn’t be here, it’s too late…”

The high-profile divorce lawyer was later found bludgeoned to death with an unusually expensive bottle of wine, yet he’s not a drinker, so what’s the significance? And what could the numbers painted on the wall near the body mean?

In this second book of the series, ex-police detective Daniel Hawthorne is called in to investigate. It’s fortunate for the police dept. that they’ve got Hawthorne to call upon since they’re, once again, baffled by the crime.

Hawthorne convinces author Anthony Horowitz, to join him and document the investigation — document only, do not get involved. That’s Tony’s cue to get involved. ⭐️

As the death toll climbs and more suspects make an appearance, adding to the confusion, Tony convinces himself that he’s getting better at unraveling the mystery; he was wrong last time, but this time he’s sure he has solved it.

The duo also finds themselves up against a grizzly character who’s determined to take credit for solving the murder.

Meanwhile, Tony tries to figure out what Daniel is hiding in his past. ⭐️

The author

The story is narrated by Horowitz who is writing about himself writing about Hawthorne and the case. He weaves his real-life books into the story he’s telling about Hawthorne, a clever way to promote himself. This sounded a bit pretentious at first, but I did look him up for more of his work. Nice promo Anthony Horowitz! ⭐️

He leaves no questions unanswered, and if we read book 1, The Word is Murder, we already know we’ll learn more about our detective(s) in book 3. ⭐️
